Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that
improves the appearance (though not necessarily the functionality) of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement in dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.
There are
two dental specialties that predominantly focus on dental aesthetics:
Prosthodontics and Orthodontics. It can also include periodontics (the plastic surgeon of dentistry).
Most cosmetic procedures are elective rather than essential although some cases of treatment provide restorative benefits. However, certain procedures require more complex and specialized care.
